Each team of participants is given a project "case" to plan and execute on the game board. From staffing delays to dwindling stakeholder support, the way real projects operate is built into the flow of the game. There are three roles for participants to play:

Project Manager: The project manager is responsible for ensuring that the project deliver the maximum lifecycle value to the stakeholders, and must juggle a number of responsibilities. This role is responsible for managing stakeholders, leading team alignment activities, monitoring progress, and making plan and schedule adjustments.
Dedicated Team Members: These are the project generalists who are assigned to the project full time. They create a resource plan and then work on scheduled activities by assigning appropriate resources. They have to manage their resources, watch their error rate, build contingency plans for risk, report progress to the team, and participate in team alignment activities.

Specialists: These team members have specialized skills so they must be spread over multiple projects. They have to balance their work between this team's project and the other demands on their time. In this multi-project environment they must also get activities done by deciding priorities, assigning resources, managing headcount, quality, and risk.

By compressing time and space The Project Value Game® clarifies these the cause and effect of these interactions, and provides a fun and interesting way to build teamwork. Participants also get a chance to play a role that is different from their traditional role on theproject. By "walking in the other guy's shoes" for a while they see the pressures of the role and the rationale behind certain decisions. Teams practice new approaches and behaviors and get quick unambiguous feedback on their performance.
